Overview
According to the Concept
Plan 2001, Singapore’s MRT system will be based on a radial
and orbital system through which MRT lines can link up more
areas on the
island for faster and easier access to the city which will
take no less than a few minutes.
In the Concept Plan 2001,
orbital lines will join up regional centres in Jurong
East,
Woodlands, and Tampines, which
will result in a shorter
travelling time between the
3 ends of Singapore. The 3 regional centres will act as
areas for regional activities and events to take place in
that particular section of Singapore. Jurong East will act
as the regional centre for the west, while Tampines will act
as the regional centre for the east and Woodlands will be
designed as the regional centre for the
north.
Sub-regional centres will
link the inner orbital MRT lines with the radial lines which
will help to reduce the flow of passengers as they travel
from the different sections
of Singapore to the Central Area.
As such, Singapore’s
future plan for the MRT system is in-line with the Concept
Plan stated above.
The 3 regional centres
have already been set up in 2001 for the purpose of
connecting Singapore together with a highly extensive MRT
system. The 5 other sub-
regional centres will be developed in the future when the
MRT lines joining those areas are completed.
According to the Concept
Plan 2001 and the proposed MRT map shown above, the radial
lines designed for this purpose are:
- East West Line
- Several sections of North South Line
- North East Line
- Downtown Line
Whereas the orbital lines
which join the regional and sub-regional centres are:
- Circle Line
- North Shore Line
- Sections of North South Line
Singapore’s MRT system
will hence be much more extensive than before as it will
reach out to areas which were previously inaccessible by the
MRT.
